Notes: This is mainly collectively and individually improvisations based on written pieces and as the recording is of inferior quality, it is difficult to hear who are taking the solos.

However, clearly heard are: James Newton, Jimmy Lyons, Karen Borca and Charles Tyler in addition to Cecil Taylor.

The Orchestra played at Lush Life though March and April and the members varied slightly through the period.

 

Andre Martinez remembers:

"...every Sunday I was a full time member of the Band and spent many, many, many hours (and days and years) with the maestro from this point on till Sept. '92. ...

There were a lot of changes in the horn section from gig to gig. We rehearsed at the Bell Telephone Building in lower Manhattan across the street from the Odeon Cafe, which is still there.

We would go there on many occasions to eat after rehearsals. ...it was at ESP Records [recording studio], Bernard Stollman's place (as confirmed by Karen Borca) and I would see Jerome Cooper there.

I missed two [of the] weekends at Lush Life because I was under contract with Dee Dee Sharp to do some concerts for her and Gamble & Huff Productions in Philadelphia. Which was cool with Cecil, as he was always curious about their operations and show productions. ...extensive conversations I had with Cecil... led to a lot of the new concepts for his upcoming shows. ..

.From this point on Cecil's shows began to change and become more like productions [with] intros, poetry, dance, chanting... Pieces were scored as sections where moments of inspiration and melodic romantic-type melodies took place, encores were shortened but the power and creative fury and freedom remained.

It was about show and production, layout and format: Intro and dance; followed by Chant; then entrance and set theme; followed by more intense piece; then a few solos; then a medium piece; followed by an all-out piece-- then bring it down, then up and out. Then do a small encore, leave, and let them come again for more the next time-- Show biz.

And it worked very well for Cecil the great entertainer and musician. Some of the other horn players were Steve Coleman, James Newton and David Murray..."

The Orchestra also played 820315, 820321, 820328, 820404, 820411, 820412, 820418 and 820425.

"This was a strange hit perhaps the strangest we ever did... First of all this place was a bomb factory during the war and had a very strange vibe. When we got there [it] is was filled with hardcore raver-punk types with Mohican haircuts-- not our usual crowd.

Anyway we played the first set and played our butts off and the response from the crowd was luke-warm. Cecil and crew went to dressing room for a break, Cecil in amazement said "what the hell is going on here this crowd is strange or very demanding". He then suggested that Rashid and I, followed by William and Jimmy, then the Maestro, do a whole percussion intro batucada style to start the second set. The crowd flipped, they danced on tables and then started chanting, just going wild. We then played the set and they were hooked, as the standing ovations and encores proved..."

Andrew Martinez remembers:

"...watching the Paris tape... if you notice after the first set, we leave the stage and don't come back for encore. Reason being, the night before Cecil was put on the spot and was made to play with the Art Ensemble of Chicago as part of contract, and monies of entire tour was tied in somehow. So the maestro did perform with them. The next day the maestro plays, but one set only, as agreed.
So we play, the crowd is going wild chanting and all, and no band returns. You know these crowds can level the place if you don't respond quick enough. Needless to say the promoter is flipping out.

The response from the maestro: "Well, if we are to play a SECOND SET!!! Then that will require SECOND SET!!! compensation. The frantic promoter then compensates the maestro, and we return to the stage...

The Paris gig was the finale of the Two Continents tour and of the Paris Jazz festival."
